“Music is the soul introducing itself.”
Laura de Elvira
Bio
Laura de Elvira is a Melbourne-born and -based musician with a special connection to Europe through heritage and lived experience. Her versatility as a musician results from the twists and turns of her life-long love affair with music and musical instruments, which has culminated in her current specialisation in flamenco guitar.
Laura studied flamenco in its birthplace, Andalucía, Spain, while living in Granada, and continues tutelage with her teacher remotely to this day. A skilled instrumentalist, Laura’s varied repertoire also includes vocals in English, Spanish and Italian, allowing her to provide a robust and varied performance as a solo musician.
Laura has performed at weddings, restaurants, private functions, open-mic nights and, most memorably, at the foot of Spanish monuments. She also has experience in session recording. Laura enjoys performing solo and collaborating with other musicians and singers.
Committed to ongoing musical learning, Laura currently has her sights set on accompaniment of flamenco singing and dancing, and hopes to one day construct her own flamenco guitar by hand.
Information
Who is Elvira?
A stage name is a traditional marker of a flamenco artist.
Elvira forms part of the original name of the city of Granada, Medina-Elvira.
While living in Andalucía, Laura attended flamenco guitar lessons with her maestro, David Colomo, Pajarillo, on Granada’s famous street by the same name, Calle Elvira.
At the entrance to this street, an archway, Puerta de Elvira, pictured above, stands as a historic gateway to the city, and was the view that Laura saw each day from her balcony.
Laura affectionately named her Granada-bought flamenco guitar Elvira after each of these elements. It was then David, Pajarillo, who suggested the artistic alias Laura de Elvira, to symbolise belonging to the city, to her music and to her guitar.
